Bio-Digester – Onsite Waste Treatment By DRDO

Bio-digester technology is used to decompose biological waste generated by humans. It degrades human waste into usable water and gases in an eco-friendly manner. The generated biogas can be utilized for heating and cooking if generated in sufficient volumes. The water can be recycled for gardening and irrigation purposes.
Anaerobic Biodegradation inside Bio-Digesters
The biodigester technology essentially involves a composite bacteria called inoculum inside the multi-chambered bio-tank. The inoculum is a consortium of anaerobic bacteria that has been formulated and adopted to work at temp as low as -5° C. The inoculum acts as a seed material to the bio-digester. It converts the organic waste into water, methane and carbon-dioxide. The anaerobic process inactivates the pathogens responsible for water-borne diseases. The bio-digester serves as a reaction vessel for bio-methanation and provides the anaerobic conditions and required, optimal temperature for the bacteria. The temperature in the bio-digester is maintained between 5° – 30° C. The optimum temp is maintained by microbial heat and insulation of the reactor. This process finally degrades the waste matter and releases methane along with treated water. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Ministry of Defence, the bio-digester technology is an innovative and cost-effective solution for the mega problem of water pollution and health hazards associated with open defecation.
